NRW Professional Teaching Competence for Universities certificate program

The NRW Professional Teaching Competence for Universities certificate program focuses on achieving progress in five areas:
Teaching and learning, examination and assessment, advising students, feedback and evaluation and developing innovative teaching and course provision. The program is coordinated by all the member institutions of the “Hochschuldidaktik NRW” network, and participants can take courses at all member universities (depending on capacity).

NRW Digital teaching certificate program

Participants in the NRW Professional Teaching Competence for Universities certificate program can also specialize in digital teaching methods. Those taking this option must note the special arrangements required by the planning for the extension and specialization modules.

Registration and organizational matters

Members of the University of Bonn can study for the NRW Professional Teaching Competence for Universities certificate at the BZH; those interested can chose the option specializing in digital teaching. To do so, please register in Confluence (accessible from BONNET or via VPN) in the section University didactic qualification.

Teaching staff from member institutions of the “Hochschuldidaktik NRW” network can take individual courses at the BZH. Nevertheless, the certificate is usually issued by their home institution.

Feel free to book a consultation session to learn more about the NRW certificate and our other offers! This can be performed online using our Confluence registration form (accessible from BONNET or via VPN). Or simply write an email.

The NRW certificate program can usually be completed within three to five semesters. Participants must have completed the course after five years at the latest.

The NRW certificate program has a modular structure with a basic and specialist level. It also permits participants to tailor the course in accordance with their individual needs. This is why there is only a single binding (NRW-wide) specification for the sequence in which the modules are to be completed:
The basic module and at least half of the extension module (30 working units (WU)) must have been completed before participants will be permitted to progress to the specialist level. They will also be required to have completed the extension module by the time they have finished the specialization module.

Participants taking a certain number of courses on the NRW certificate program specializing in digital teaching methods will have this noted on their certificate. They will be asked to indicate this preference upon registration for the specialization module.

Prerequisites:

  • Extension module: at least 30 working units (WU) in the area of specialization, of which 10 WU are to be taken from an eTeaching workshop and a further minimum of 20 WU are to be taken from two different subject areas in the chosen area of specialization.
  • Specialization module: a project related to the area of specialization

Please note:
The NRW certificate can only be awarded once, either with or without the specialization in digital teaching.

Members of the University of Bonn are also welcome to attend courses at other member institutions of the “Hochschuldidaktik NRW” network. An overview of all network provision is provided on the Courses and workshop web page of the “Hochschuldidaktik NRW” network.

Credits for university didactic training courses run by other institutions or networks are usually accepted for credit transfer to the NRW certificate, as long as the institution issuing them is affiliated to the German Association for Educational and Academic Staff in Higher Education (DGHD).

Qualifications without a direct reference to higher education didactics, but which support their holders in realizing the relevant university didactic learning outcomes (key qualification for teaching), can be subject to credit transfer to cover max. 10% of the entire certificate program (20-24 WU).

Please feel free to make an appointment for a consultation to resolve questions pertaining to credit transfer.

Use of Confluence requires registration in or a VPN connection to BONNET. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and establishes a secure and encrypted connection via the non-secure public Internet.
